First Apartment Essentials: The Only Checklist You Need
The Trap of "Essential" Lists
Most first apartment checklists are secretly shopping lists designed to make you spend money. A garlic press is not essential. A wine decanter is not essential. You need far less than retailers want you to believe.
This guide is organized by actual priority: what you need on day one, what you need by week two, and what you can add over the following months.
Day One Non-Negotiables
Bedroom
- Mattress (or air mattress temporarily) and bedding
- Pillow
- Lamp or overhead lighting
- Curtains or blinds (for privacy and sleep)
Bathroom
- Towel (just one is fine to start)
- Toilet paper
- Shower curtain and rings
- Basic toiletries: soap, toothbrush, toothpaste
Kitchen
- One pot, one pan
- A few plates, bowls, cups
- Basic utensils: spatula, knife, cutting board
- Dish soap and a sponge
Week One Additions
- Trash cans (kitchen and bathroom)
- Cleaning supplies: all-purpose cleaner, paper towels, broom
- Hangers for your closet
- A few kitchen tools: can opener, measuring cups, colander
- First aid kit
- Extension cord and power strip
Month One Upgrades
- Couch or seating
- Coffee table or side table
- Bookshelf or storage unit
- Full kitchen setup: baking sheet, mixing bowls, spice rack
- Vacuum or broom/dustpan
- Iron and ironing board (or a steamer)
Common Mistakes
Don't buy everything at once. Live in your space for a few weeks and let your actual needs reveal themselves. That kitchen gadget you think you need? Wait 30 days. If you still want it, buy it. Most of the time, you won't.
